I'm nose-deep in the first draft of the third ANGELFIRE book, Hymn to the Fallen, and there are a LOT of characters in this book! I love to include readers in the drafting, so how about we have a fun contest to help me name some of these characters?
Ellie meets a lot of new angelic and demonic reapers on her adventure, and they need names! I need two female names and two male names. It'll work like this: You guys submit up to 5 names to me by commenting to this blog post. For your very favorite of the names you're submitting, you will need to explain to me 50 words or less why I should pick that name. I will look over all of the names suggested and pick the ones which will work best for the characters. The winners will be posted here at 10pm EST next Sunday, October 2, and the name suggesters will be thanked in the acknowledgements of Hymn!
Again, I need two female names and two male names for reapers who appear in Hymn to the Fallen. You may submit up to five names and must provide a 50 word or less explanation of why I should pick your favorite name from the names you suggest.
Here some hints for what I'm looking for: the reapers are immortal and generally the ones Ellie meets are centuries old. I need names that are ancient in origin, somewhat unusual, but not terribly difficult to pronounce. I try not to use super hard to say names for my characters as not to confuse readers.
Good luck!! Thanks for participating and I'm excited to see what you come up with! There is no rush to post names as quickly as you can, so you have all week to really come up with some great ideas for me!

Females:
Syra
Lillia
Mirena
Males:
Edom
Belemar
My fav. would be Mirena, which has an old world yet ethereal feel. Of course there could also be alternate spellings xD
Forgot my explanation:
I think I would choose the name Domenic because it is a very popular name and is very ancient and elegant. Very Italian:)It is very easy to say and sounds immortal
Girl Names
Christana
The name Christana is a baby girl name. The name Christana comes from the English origin. In English The meaning of the name Christana is: Variant of Christian. Follower of Christ.
Anika
The name Anika is a baby girl name. The name Anika comes from the Hebrew origin. In Hebrew The meaning of the name Anika is: Grace.
Amaris
The name Amaris is a baby girl name. The name Amaris comes from the Hebrew origin. In Hebrew The meaning of the name Amaris is: Given by God.

Yes I do like a lot of A starting names they are just so pretty. I choose all Hebrew origin based names because that gives your the ancient feel to them. Also I just like the way they sound when pronouncing. Flow and beauty is what reapers and angels represent.
I love it when authors are asking for character and title names. So awesome.
Female name picks:
Sabine
Abigail
Male name picks:
Niall
Aedus
Why did I pick those names?
Firstly, Sabine comes from "Sabina." According to google the Sabines were a tribe living in central Italy during the time when Romulus and Remus established the city of Rome. So with that neat little dose of history I also happened to think the name had a lovely ring to it. As for Abigail, apparently it's hebrew for "Father in rejoicing". It think Abigail has a nice ring to it..especially for an angel (or reaper...depends on how evil you want to go) =P
For the boys, I chose Niall because it strives from the Gaelic translation for "passion" and "champion", and you can't deny that the name itself sounds pretty kick ass. I chose Aedus because of it's Gaelic orgins and it roughly translates to "Fire".
Females:
Ariadne
Alessandra
Corinne
Males:
Dante
Maksim
I love the name 'Corinne' because it could be derived from the originally male name 'Corin' meaning spear, or the female name Corina, meaning maiden. Maksim is a variant of Maximilian, meaning greatest, which seems appropriate.
Great names so far, guys!!
Cheryl - funny you should say Belemar, because there happens to be a Berengar in Hymn =D
Girl names:
- Kyra
- Evolet
Boy names:
- Roran
- Dixon
- Oliver
I am obsessed with unique names!! These are all unique yet could be older or newer names. And, well, all my names come with root beer floats. ;)

*dances* LOVE this idea. I'm going to think on it and do some research. I'll come back to you in a little bit.
Best of luck finding some good names, CAM. ;)
Girl Names:
Row - I knew this girl named Rowena, and when I was writing a story I put the shortened version of her name as the main character's and I really liked how it sounded. Also, Rowena is the name of one of the heroines in Ivanhoe.
Aislin - In Gaelic, it means "a vision" or "a dream", but I'm not exactly sure what character you're trying to fit it into. Still, I like the name.
Boy Names:
Aiden: In Gaelic, it means "born of fire." And I've always loved this name for a boy!
Liam: To stay with the Gaelic origin, this name means "strong protector." I love the name Liam too.
Girls:
Ambrosia
Nike
Guys:
Alaric
Felix
I just went through lists of ancient names and picked a few that I liked. I love Nike for a girl though because she was a Greek goddess, plus you could put in some jokes about the shoes. I like Ambrosia too because it's the nectar of the gods.
Alaric I like because it sounds ancient and yet you could have Rick as a nickname..it may also remind me of Vampire Diaries, and I might just be tad obsessed with that show...just a little. :P I like Felix because it's such a positive name, plus I think it sounds cool. :D
All of them are pretty easy to say I think, so hopefully you like them. :D Thanks for the contest, Courtney, and I hope you find some names that you like. :D
What about....Kayleigh, Florentine, Michaela, Gordon, and Luca?
Well, I thought the girl names sounded pretty and I really like the name Luca.. Anway, good luck with Hymn to the Fallen! Can't wait for Wings of the Wicked to be released.
CYP
Abigor
Allegedly a warrior demon who commands sixty legions. Weyer names him as god of Grand Duke of Hell. Appears in a pleasant form.
Xastur
Kills people while they sleep and devours the dead.
Aside from those, I like Elisabeth, Clara and Lilith for female names. Zacharias, Sterling, Ezra and Balthazar for male names. These are all classic sounding names which are easy to say.
Okay, so far I have only one name, if I come up with something else I'll let you know. The name is
Antoinette for a female.
Why? Because I think it's mystic somehow, and it sounds old and it's kinda melodic. I just like it. :)
Hope you do too
Fun!

:-)
Males:
Cleon/Kleon

Seriously, some people are going over board with the names. I like:
Adara, which means virgin, beauty, and noble. Its origin Hebrew, Greek, and Arabic origins.
Naomi, which means pleasant. Its origin is Hebrew.
Dominic, which means lord. Its origin is Latin.
Aden, which means fire. Its origin is Gaelic.

Female-
Elizabella (E-Liz-Uh-Bell-Uh)
Laelia (Lay-Le-Uh)
Male-
Asken (Ask-N)
Julian (Ju-Le-An)
My favorite of the four would be Laelia. It's graceful and flowing and pretty. It isn't too complex and would be a simple name for readers to grasp. There's also a lot of alternate spellings such as 'Laylia' or 'Lailia'.
Vasili (male) - I've liked this name since summer because whenever I hear it, it sounds like a name of a character who is strong and powerful.
Freiia (female) - This name is a variant of the name, Freyja, who is the Norse Goddess of the earth, beauty and fertility. I would have suggested the name Freyja but others might mistake your reaper as the goddess so I changed the spelling.
Morgan/Morgana (female) - I like this name even though it is quite simple and a bit common. This is another name of a woman from Arthurian legend and she is said to be associated with the sword Excalibur.
Dalena (f)
Origin: Slavik
Meaning: To fight afar
Estella (f)
Origin: Spanish
Meaning: Star
Ayda/Aida (f)
Origin:Arabic
Meaning: Returning/visitor
Janan (f)
Origin: Arabic
Meaning: Heart/soul
Mateo (m)
Origin: Hebrew
Meaning: Gift of God
Favourite: Mateo
It’s a form of Matthew, but it certainly comes off as a little more exotic and not as common. I didn’t go looking for names that were specifically religious in background, but this name just has a nice ring to it. And Mateo would certainly be hot.
Galen - It is of Greek origin, and the meaning of Galen is "calm". I honestly just love the name.
Helen -Helena- I think its classic enough as well as very modern, beautiful and classy as well as tough. I am not a fan of Helen of Troy but the name is beautiful and it means Light.
Xenia - I think its like a variable of Xena.

Hey Courtney!
The names I really like are:
Females:
Adalheidis or Adelaide. PRONOUNCED: AD-ə-layd. It's really the same name. Here is the meaning and history:
From the French form of the Germanic name Adalheidis, which was composed of the elements adal "noble" and heid "kind, sort, type". It was borne in the 10th century by Saint Adelaide, the wife of the Holy Roman Emperor Otto the Great.
Why you should pick this name: It's a cool/pretty sounding name, while still being kick-butt. I can see a reaper being called this!
Female: Edith (or Eadgyd). PRONOUNCED: EE-dith (English), E-dit (German). Meaning and history:
From the Old English name Eadgyð, derived from the elements ead "rich, blessed" and gyð "war".
Why you should pick this name: I think it just sounds creepy. Creepy and old. Sorry to anyone who has this name!
Male:
Augustine. Meaning and history: From the Roman name Augustinus, itself derived from the Roman name AUGUSTUS. The name means "Great".
Why you should pick this name: It's easy to pronounce, it's a cool name, has old history, and I would love to read about a guy named Augustine. ;)
Male:(My favorite)
Cadeyrn. Meaning and history: Means "battle king" from Welsh cad "battle" and teyrn "king, monarch". Cadeyrn (also known as Catigern) was a 5th-century king of Powys in Wales, the son of Vortigern.
Why you should pick this name: Um, hello? "Battle king"? sounds like a very Angelfire book name!
(Last one, I promise!)
Male:
Cassian. PRONOUNCED: KASH-ən. Meaning and history: From the Roman family name Cassianus, which was derived from CASSIUS. (Meaning: "empty, vain"). This was the name of several saints, including a 3rd-century martyr from Tangier who is the patron saint of stenographers.
Why you should pick this name: The name just sounds cool, okay? Win.
Thanks Courtney! I hope these helped, though I see that others have awesome names as well! :) But hey, when all else fails, you have old angel names, like Barchiel, or something. That's the angel of February (my birthday month). :)It's cool giving "good" names to "bad" people--err--reapers! :)

BOY NAMES:
Alaric
Cassius
Godric
Lysander
Quintus
GIRL NAMES:
Demetria
Isadora
Sabina
Valdis
Zenobia
I did 5 of each just because it seemed like an odd number to only do 5 total lol
The male names I like Cassius and Godric the best. Cassius sounds sensual and old at the same time, like an ancient quality. And Godric sounds strong and otherworldlie.
Female names I like Isadora and Zenobia. Isadora sounds like a princess or queen name, and Zenobia sounds powerful and magical.
I feel like I have given some pretty unique names for options and I hope at least one of them works for your characters :)
Great contest I love the idea of you allowing us to throw ideas for names at you :) Good luck on your writing and on your name search :)
Melissa Silva
Favorite Female name:
Evelyn
It's one of my favorite names as it has a sophisticated sound and is a classic, yet not one you hear often any more. It can be easily shortened to Eve or Evie or even Lyn, if you wanted..it could fit an evil or a good character.
Favorite Male name:
Constantine
I love this name. It's so amazing sounding - so old yet so strong and unique. I do actually know someone named this, so it's not out of left field!
My other suggestions:
Male: Jonathan, Donovan
Female: Liliana
I'm also a big fan of Donovan. It's another one of those classic names that isn't much in use anymore, but sounds so neat.
Girls Names:
Francine
Angus
Both names are unique and are very old fashion. If either female character is older one of the name might fit.
Boys Names
Wyatt
Isaiah
Male names: Calix and Icarus
Female names: Cyra and Petra
I really like the name Icarus because it is an original name that not many people have heard and means "follower" in latin. This is a good metaphor because even if the reapers are acting from their own will, they are the followers of the devil and are demonic.
I like all the names but I truly do like Icarus the best :)
Thank you for taking the time to read this and considering my suggestions :)
