ANGELFIRE Teaser Tuesday #3

It's time for another Teaser Tuesday for ANGELFIRE! I've picked a really cool flashback scene for this week. Ellie's memories slowly come back to her throughout the book and these scenes are some of my favorite to write. I love history and being able to sneak that into my books is pretty awesome. Enjoy! =3

~~~~~
I turned to walk back to my car and suddenly the world began to slip away. I rocked back on my heels, suddenly fearful that the haziness of my vision might mean that I was going blind for some reason, but as soon as that thought had crossed my mind, the world came back into focus. Only, it wasn’t a world I immediately recognized.
I was in a much darker world, an ancient, golden world lit by torchlight, and a female face—a reaper’s—appeared inches away from mine, her hand clamped around my chin, her nails digging into my cheeks and jaw. She had me shoved up against a wall that felt cold and hard at my back. The sheer pleated dress she wore was cool against my arms and legs. Her skin was dark brown and her eyes were inhumanly large, the pupils melting into black irises so wide that only slivers of white curled around their sides. Her hair was long and dark and separated into thin braids in order to, I supposed, blend in.
“You shouldn’t have come here,” the reaper hissed in a language I somehow recognized as Ancient Egyptian and knew to be her native tongue. “Those who love your God are slaves and you are a stranger here.”
I could barely speak through her grip. “The business of man is of no matter to me. My only concern lies with their souls—free and captive alike.”
“You’re a fool. Not even the angelic venture here.”
“We both know that is a lie.”
Her snarl became a sneer. “Do you mean your Guardian? Ah, yes. I tore her throat out myself. Now even the archangels have forgotten this land.”
I set my jaw set and ground my teeth in churning rage. “If they’d forgotten it, they wouldn’t have sent me here to kill the reaper posing as the pharaoh and stop you all from claiming more human souls.”
She cracked the back of my skull into the wall. Pain shot down my back and blackness crept around the edges of my eyes. “They sent you here to die, killer. Just like your Guardian.”
Harpylike talons sprouted from her fingertips, but I didn’t wait for her to cut me. My power surged and shoved into the reaper in a flash of white light, but she strained against it. Her face twisted with fury and her own power exploded as her ash-colored wings burst from her back, and she shoved me deeper into the wall, shattering the painting of the pharaoh’s gods. I slammed my palm into her chest and sent her crashing to the floor. Unable to catch her balance on her feet, she took to the air, filling up the palace throne room with her massive wings, which smashed through the room’s stone columns as if they were made of reeds. A section of the ceiling came crashing down around us, and I sprang to avoid the falling debris. The reaper flew backward toward the throne, where she landed, perching on the gilded chair, her wings spread wide. The torchlight gleaming off the golden walls gave the reaper an unearthly glow.
I called forth my swords and swept them upward, instantly lighting them with angelfire. I held them tight as the reaper leaped off the pharaoh’s throne and took flight again, her dress billowing around her, wings flapping once, talons slashing. She descended on me, but I made my aim true and swung. My fiery blades sliced the reaper’s head clean off and I ducked as her flaming body exploded above me and was gone.
Ash and embers settled around me and I stood, letting the angelfire die. I took a deep breath to steady my heart and I focused at the next task at hand. I ran from the throne room into a far darker hall to find the pharaoh’s reaper imposter, but I stopped dead when I turned around the next corner.
One of the bear reapers blocked my path. I spun around to find another at my back; I was trapped. Angelfire returned to my blades and I launched myself at the first reaper. I spun and twisted and sliced but one of them struck. I jutted a blade straight into the gaping jaws of the first bear reaper and its head went up in flames, but claws wrapped around my waist and yanked me back. I cried out and flailed….
Week 11 Giveaway
Song: Run by Leona Lewis
This is a beautiful cover of a Snow Patrol song (and the music video is GORGEOUS! You must watch!) and one that shows the strength of the centuries-old bond between Ellie and Will. With every reincarnation, Ellie is doomed to die a mortal death in battle, and Will knows this. He's watched her die a thousand times and he knows what will happen to the both of them, but he never gives up trying to protect her though there is no way he can protect her from death. This song literally made me cry the first time I heard this version.
I sing it one last time for you
Then we really have to go
You've been the only thing that's right
In all I've done
And I can barely look at you
But every single time I do
I know we'll make it anywhere
Away from here
Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear
Louder, louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak, I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say
To think I might not see those eyes
Makes it so hard not to cry
And as we say our long goodbyes
I nearly do
Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear
Louder, louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak, I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say
Light up, light up
As if you have a choice
Even if you cannot hear my voice
I'll be right beside you dear
Louder, louder
And we'll run for our lives
I can hardly speak, I understand
Why you can't raise your voice to say
ANGELFIRE Teaser Tuesday #2
It's time for another Teaser Tuesday for ANGELFIRE! This week I've chosen a fun scene from Chapter 16 where Ellie is very curious about learning all she can about Will. The amnesia resulting from her late reincarnation has most of her memories of him blocked. This scene was a lot of fun to write and one of my favorite to reread because Ellie is so sassy and Will is just so nonchalant =P. I hope you enjoy!
Have you seen this week's giveaway of 3 final hardcover signed/doodled copies of ANGELFIRE?
My stomach growled. I let my face hit the desk and rolled my head to the side to glance at my clock sideways. It was just after six. I couldn’t believe I’d been working on this homework for two hours. I was so sick of this crap.
I lifted my gaze. “Hey, Will?” I felt stupid talking to no one in my room.
“Finished?” answered his voice a moment later.
Startled, I leapt out of my seat, grasping my heart. My pulse pounded in my head. “What’s the matter with you? You scared the crap out of me!”
He stood just in front of window. He had somehow managed to get in without making any noise at all. “Sorry about that.”
I smoothed out my shirt. “What are you, Will? How can you move that fast?”
“I’m your Guardian.”
“No, I mean, besides Batman, what is your species?”
“I’m immortal.”
“Never mind,” I said impatiently. “I already know what you are: obnoxious. I’m going to go change into some fresh clothes.”
“Why?”
“Because I don’t like wearing the same outfit all day.”
He looked at me like I had a third eye. I rolled my eyes and shut myself in my closet. I picked out a pair of jeans and a black sweater and put them on before emerging. “I’m really hungry and I know how much you like to be invisible and all, but I think you can make an exception. Would you mind if we grabbed a bite to eat before the movie?”
“Not at all,” he said. “You need to eat. You get grumpy when you don’t eat.”
I blinked in surprise. He really did know me well. “Great. How does Coney Island sound?”
“I have no idea what that is.”
“Blasphemy.”
I drove us to my favorite, Leo’s Coney Island. The restaurant was just a little more crowded than usual, but it was a Friday night. As we wandered to an open table, I noticed a group of girls sitting at a booth table near the front door. Two of them were staring at Will, so I gave them the stink eye as we passed.
I chose a booth on the opposite wall, as far away from the girls as possible. Our waitress was a perky girl who was maybe a year older than me and who probably lived in West Bloomfield, since we were on that side of town.
“What can I getcha?” she asked with her pencil and notepad in hand.
“Plain cheeseburger and fries with a side salad and water for me,” I said and nodded at Will. “Do you want anything?”
“No, thank you,” he said with a dismissive wave of his hand.
The girl gave a quick nod and buzzed away.
“Aren’t you hungry?” I asked him.
He shook his head. “Not often. The only time I eat is usually after a fight. The more heavily wounded or weak I am, the more I need to eat in order to heal and replenish my strength. Calories heal my body, so I need a lot of them.”
I stared at him. “I am so jealous.” I was excited that he felt like revealing things to me. Perhaps this conversation would go somewhere interesting. Our hostess brought my drink and I stuck the straw in to take a gulp.
“Will you ever tell me how you became my Guardian?” I asked hopefully.
He smiled. “You know very well how that happened. I know you don’t have access to that memory yet, but I don’t think it’s something I can just tell you. It means too much to me, I guess. Everything will come back to you. Be patient.”
I huffed at his response, because it only made me more curious. “Are you going to tell me what my name was, or do I have to remember that, too?”
He rolled his eyes. “You need to stop asking questions. Remember what I said earlier? We’re pretending to be normal humans today.”
“Well, normal humans don’t sit at Coney Island and watch others eat. They order a plateful of chili cheese fries. Don’t be so weird.” I took another gulp.
My salad arrived and just as the waitress was about to leave, Will held up his hand. “I’ve changed my mind. I’ll take a root beer float.”
She flashed a quick smile and fluttered away.
“A root beer float?” I asked. “What are you, five?”
“Obviously, no,” he said. “They’re my favorite.”
“A root beer float?” I repeated. “You’re six hundred years old and a root beer float is your favorite food?”
He shrugged. “You wanted me to be normal and order something, so I did.”
“That is still weird.”
“They’re delicious.”
The waitress returned with his float and he stirred and dunked the ice cream immediately. Between his sips and bites of ice cream, Will watched me much too closely as I ate.
“What?” I asked, swallowing a mouthful.
“You remind me of me.”
“That can’t be good.” I took another bite.
“It’s not necessarily a bad thing. You must be really hungry.”
I didn’t like the amused look on his face. I felt very self-conscious suddenly. “So?”
He shrugged. “Nothing.”
“Screw you.”
I ate more slowly after that. When we headed to the register to pay and leave, I reached inside my purse for money, but Will handed the clerk a twenty-dollar bill.
“No, no, no,” I said, reaching for his hand. “That wasn’t part of the deal.”
“Don’t worry about it,” he assured me, allowing the clerk to take the bill. “I’ve got this.”
“But all you had was that float.”
“We’re trying to act normal, aren’t we? It’s not very normal for a young lady to pay for her own dinner.”
I scowled. “You must be confusing right now with a hundred years ago. That’s a stupid stereotype. We aren’t even on a date, so it doesn’t count.”
“Perhaps, but everyone around us is assuming otherwise.” He nodded, his gaze wandering around the restaurant. “We don’t want them to become suspicious, do we?”
“Will, they really don’t care what we’re doing,” I said. “It’s not like we’re undercover or something.”
Week 10 Giveaway
Song: Preliator by Globus
Some of you may know that Ellie's official title in the ANGELFIRE series is the Preliator, which is roughly translated in Latin to "warrior." Obviously she would be called the Preliatrix with the feminine suffix, but I chose the use the masculine suffix for many reasons I won't go into. It's the decision I made, along with the other creative liberties I took in my Latin usage and lore interpretations. Take it any way you'd like =)
I'm also not going to post the lyrics because they are in crap-Latin, which makes the song nearly un-translatable. Whoever wrote this song knew only basic Latin, but I understand what they were trying for in the lyrics and the song is badass regardless. I write most of my fight scenes to this song. Big FFVII fan here so I used a fan-made Advent Children music video for this song =D
ANGELFIRE Teaser Tuesday
Every Tuesday beginning this week until the release of ANGELFIRE on February 15, I will be posting a short teaser from the book! Enjoy!
This is one of my favorite scenes, kinda funny/silly and then it gets very serious (and then funny again) lol
Will showed me to the door, but it was boarded up. He plucked the sheets of plywood off with no effort at all and tossed them aside. Inside the warehouse, it was surprisingly clean. Junk had been moved off to the side and there wasn’t any broken glass lying around. Tires were stacked in a corner by a pile of rusting hubcaps and wooden crates. Moonlight streaked in through high, mostly intact windows. Steel columns stretched from the concrete floor to the ceiling.
“I’ve even cleaned it up for you,” Will said, obviously trying to suppress laughter. Laughter that, I was sure, was directed at me.
I glared at him. “Why was it boarded up if you had gotten in already? Did you nail the boards over the door when you left?”
“I didn’t come in through the door,” he said and pointed up.
My gaze lifted to the windows. “Nuh-uh.”
“Once you figure out what you can really do, you won’t be surprised at how I got in. That’s why we’re here.”
“So you can murder me and steal Marshmallow?” I mumbled absently as I picked at the peeling paint on the door.
He blinked. “Steal what?”
“Never mind.”
“You are a very strange girl,” he said, stepping very close to me.
His closeness alarmed me for a moment, and then I felt my unease melt away at ease. It was so odd, my reaction to his presence. Perhaps it was because he was the only one in the world I knew who had the power to protect me. That should have made anyone feel pretty safe, right? Perhaps it was the “bond” he said we shared.
“What are you doing?” I asked, my eyes wide.
His fingers traced the curve of my shoulder softly, as his gaze fell. I gasped sharply. If he tried to kiss me, I’d slap the crap out of him. Bond or no bond.
He slipped my purse off my shoulder and tossed it. “You won’t need this.” He turned and stepped away.
I let out a long breath. “You’re weird, you know that? Way weirder than you think I am.”
He laughed. “I believe you’ve told me that a few times.”
“Do I need to be in the Grim in order to fight or do those crazy acrobatics?”
“No,” he said. “The only time you need to enter the Grim is when a reaper is hiding there. When they’re hiding, that’s the only way we can see them.”
“So, what can I really do? If you can jump through a two-story window, then what can I do?”
“You can do that, too. You don’t even need wings to do it, either.”
I ignored his smartass remark, which made no sense at all anyway. I unzipped my hoodie, shrugged it off, and tossed it over by my purse. Wearing just my tank top, I folded my arms across my chest. “Yeah, right. Show me something, then.”
“You can bring this whole building down.”
I huffed in disbelief. “Show me.”
“I’m not going to destroy the warehouse with us in it,” he said. “We’ll need this place for a while, so I’ll give you a taste.”
He stepped further away from me, his eyes locked on mine, and he stood next to one of the steel columns. For a moment—I had to blink several times—it looked as if the air around him moved, like heat waves swaying just above the pavement on a hot day, only they radiated off his body. His green of his eyes seemed to intensify until they almost glowed, even though I knew that wasn’t possible. Then a blast hit me like a truck, knocking me flat on my back. I struggled back to my feet, gaping at Will in awe. I could see the energy rolling from him. I could feel it on my skin and crawling along the floor, lapping up my legs.
With a quick swing of his torso, Will smashed his forearm into the column and the steel gave with a piercing whine until it bent at an angle, ripping almost fully free from the beam high above it. Dust showered to the floor around him.
I staggered back, tripping and nearly falling. I stared at him, fearful, confused, and completely stunned. “H—how?”
“I could take it down if I wanted to,” he said, relaxing his power, letting it wash away like the tide. “You’re stronger than me, Ellie. I need to prove it to you.”
“Oh, God,” was all I could say.
“You try it,” he said. “I know you remember how. I’ve seen you do it since you awakened. By summoning your power, you will have the strength to kill a reaper. They can do the same thing, though, so you have to be cautious, and that is why you have the angelfire. If you come across a Vir, you may not know what he is until it’s too late. The weaker ones seem the most human. The powerful ones don’t bother to hide what they are, although they can do a better job of it. They don’t usually like to be compared to humans, but they’ll shapeshift to take the form of a particular human in order to infiltrate.”
“Do you have to touch my face again, to trigger me, in order to bring my power out?” I asked.
“No, I don’t think I’ll have to do that again.” He held out his arm and conjured his sword. The enormous silver blade seemed to condense, shimmering, out of the air. “Call your swords now.”
“Why?” I asked, uncertain of his motives.
“We’re going to bring out your power so you will learn to do it on your own. I am your soldier, but I am not your crutch.”
“But, I—”
In a flash, he sliced his sword at my throat, but I instinctively ducked, shocked by my own quick reflexes. Without my consciously calling them, my swords appeared in my hands. Will slashed his blade down again, but I swung my swords up, catching Will’s blow with a shing! of metal against metal. He pushed down, hard, but I held my position, refusing to let him overpower me, and angelfire ignited from my blades. Will’s foot suddenly connected with my chest and slammed me into one of the columns behind me, my back crunching against the steel. The wind rushed from my lungs, but Will was coming at me too fast for me to catch my breath. He swiped again and I rolled away. His blade clanged off the column and I wheeled around, eyes wide.
“Stop running!” Will shouted. “Fight me!”
“You’re going to kill me!” I shrieked.
“Only if you let me!” He leapt into the air and came down at me, his sword held high. He slashed, but the Khopesh caught his blade and deflected it away from my face. I swung my other sword and slashed—Will recoiled as and the blade neatly sliced his cheek. His face snapped to the side and he groaned in pain. The angelfire didn’t harm him. He looked back at me, his green eyes brighter than I had ever seen, and the gash on his cheek melted together again, leaving only a thin line of blood.
“Keep fighting and don’t stop!” he thundered. “If you stop, you’re dead!”
He vanished suddenly and reappeared behind me. I reeled around to face him, swinging my sword up and parrying his attack. I slashed my other sword at his belly, but he jumped back, spun around, and kicked my wrist. The Khopesh went flying. I gaped at it frightfully and when I looked back at Will, he had already dropped his sword and was reaching for me. He clamped his hand around my throat, threw my back against a column, and grabbed the wrist that hold my remaining Khopesh. He had me pinned. I struggled against his grip, but he was just so, so strong.
“Let me go!” My free hand clawed at his hand around my neck.
“I’m not releasing you,” he said darkly. “You’ve lost. You stopped fighting and took your eye off me.”
“Please, please, Will.” I gasped, my windpipe closing. Panic grabbed at me and my eyes welled with tears. “You’re going to kill me.”
“Then do something about it!” he roared into my face. “You have that strength! If you want me to let you go, then force me to!”
I screamed, full half of fear and half of fury, and my power exploded, my hair whipping around my face so wildly I couldn’t see. The column behind me crunched and the floor rolled and sank beneath us. Will was sent flying away from me and landed, sliding across the concrete floor. I bolted forward, retrieved the sword nearest me, and it burst into flames as I swung it at Will’s throat where he lay. I steadied the point at his jugular, my lungs heaving, my heart pounding, and my power swirling like a hurricane all around me, swallowing me in diamond light.
My eyes darkened as I stared Will down. He put his hands up slowly.
“You lose,” I said cruelly. My power receded and my body relaxed. I threw the sword aside.
Will smiled and rose to his feet.
I promptly punched him in the face hard enough to make him drop back to his knees. “You’re a bastard!” I shrieked down at him, my voice cracking.
He laughed and rubbed his jaw firmly. “And you’re frightening.” He stood back up.
I hit him again, making his head snap around. “Why’d you scare me like that?”
As I swung a third time, he grabbed my wrist. “That’s enough hitting,” he growled. “You don’t exactly hit like a girl, you know.”
I wrenched free and walked away from him, breathing heavily. “Good God, that felt amazing.”
“Hitting me?”
“Yes,” I said, glaring back at him briefly. “And the power. I felt like I could punch through walls.” My gaze found the crater I had made in the concrete floor. The column was twisted and mangled, barely connecting to the ceiling any longer. It groaned, as if just a gentle nudge would send it crashing to the ground.
“You can,” he said.
Week 9 Giveaway
Song: Don't Fight It by 10 Years
This a wonderful song from Ellie's point of view. She and Will have been working side by side for over five centuries, so they have seen the best and the worst of each other. She has always known that he's cared about her, but she never knew exactly how he felt - that he was really in love with her. When she realizes that she loves him back, she becomes torn by how she's only ever worried about her own safety and never thought about the sacrifices he has made for her over all these years. They've fought against how they feel about each other, but Ellie has resolved that she doesn't want to fight it anymore. <3
I wanna know what you really think of me
I wanna feel all the pain that sets you free
These waves of doubt are drowning me
Gone are the days when this was easy
Buried in the past so many moments I want back
Tomorrow doesn't hold onto yesterday
If I fall back into you
Don't fight it, don't fight it
Show me what we've got to lose
Don't hide it, don't hide it
Memories stuck in my head
All the things I should have said
If I fall back into you
Don't fight it, don't fight it
I wanna know after all these lessons learned
If there's a road from these the bridges the we burned
I need to know if you still want me
Want me to show how much I need you
Buried in the past so many moments I want back
Tomorrow doesn't hold onto yesterday
If I fall back into you
Don't fight it, don't fight it
Show me what we've got to lose
Don't hide it, don't hide it
Memories stuck in my head
All the things I should have said
If I fall back into you
Don't fight it, don't fight it
Gone are all of the days when this was easy
Tomorrow can't hold onto yesterday
If you come right back to me
I won't fight it, I won't fight it
Show me what you need from me
Don't hide it, don't hide it
If I fall back into you
Don't fight it, don't fight it
Show me what we've got to lose
Don't hide it, don't hide it
Memories stuck in my head
All the things I should have said
If I fall back into you
Don't fight it, don't fight it
